I ran across this cd on a website that sells Todd
Rundgren merchandise. It's all instrumentals...I
guess it's what you might call jazz rock fusion.
Highly recommended if you were ever a fan of the
Mahavishnu Orchestra or the first two Utopia albums.

I've been a Daryl Hall fan going on 40 years now and really
admire his energy and just generally what a good guy
he seems to be. His new album "Laughing Down Crying" is
first-rate rockin' blue-eyed soul. Probably his best work
since the early 80's in my opinion.

My buddy Snave just sent me a copy of "Slave Ambient" by
a group called The War On Drugs. It's pretty amazing...sounds
like country-rock being played by a prog group fronted by

My Favorite Films of 2011

Young Adult- Charlize Theron is outstanding as the
former high school queen who goes back to her hometown
in order to get back with her old boyfriend. Laugh out
loud funny but also makes you think a lot about the
way we see ourselves and how hard the passage of time
can be.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes- this movie was a huge
surprise and pleasure. The acting is good and the
special effects are amazing.

Midnight in Paris- Who'd have thought Woody Allen
would still be making great films this far down the
line? Owen Wilson is utterly charming as a writer
who feels like he was born in the wrong time.

Tower Heist- a great film with a terrible title. It's
funny, clever and right in line with our national
conversation about what the super-rich have been
doing to this country.

Margin Call- an outstanding cast does a great job of
using one fictional company's financial meltdown to
explain what happened to our economy three years ago.

My Week With Marilyn- Michelle Williams absolutely deserves
a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of Marilyn
Monroe, Kenneth Branagh is marvelous as Laurence Olivier
and Eddie Redmayne is touching as the young man who
takes care of (and falls under the spell of) the blonde
goddess.

Take Shelter- Michael Shannon rocks the screen as a
man who keeps having apocalyptic visions no one else
believes.

I'd like to see regime change in Syria within the next year. There are two important reasons we and our allies should consider helping that process along:

(1) There have been an estimated 3,500 dissidents killed by that government. Assad has show himself to be an extremely brutal
dictator.

(2) Syria is Iran’s gateway to points west in the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon. A change of regime in Damascus would do a great deal to weaken Iran, both in its reach and its support at home.

Somebody is going to have to deal with the Iran problem in the near future. It would be good if they were as weak as possible when and if that fight starts.

The new M83 album is full of gorgeous musical dreamscapes.
A great album to play on your regular stereo and turn up
loud so you can really enjoy the brilliant production techniques.

Steve Wilson's new cd is called "Grace For Drowning". I like this
one a lot. It continues in somewhat the same vein as his previous
solo cd "Insurgentes". It's prog-rock but not overly busy..the
songs are intense and almost cinematic in a way. I wish I had
liked the last two Porcupine Tree albums this much.

I'm not all that excited about the new Coldplay cd "Mylo Xyloto". You get the feeling they want every cut to be a potential hit or something. Every song comes at you like a bratty little kid demanding attention.

I probably don't like the new Wilco quite as much as their last one
but it's still darn good. It's adventurous and there are a couple
of absolutely really beautiful songs..."Black Moon" and "Open Mind".

I retired from my job at Centurylink today. It was
exactly thirty years ago that I started with Pacific
NW Bell. Later we became US WEST and then Qwest and
most recently, Centurylink.

It was a good job and I met lots of great people.
But it's definitely time for a change. I want to
get in better shape, write a novel and maybe do some
volunteer or political work.
