Holy Hypocrisy!

I'm continually amazed how religious conservatives can be advocating "small government" one minute and the next are chomping at the bit to get involved in people's personal lives.

Republicans Returning To Reality?

No more Sarah Palin on Fox News? Sean Hannity suddenly willing to talk about immigration reform? Marco Rubio defending compromise? Maybe there's hope for this country yet.

Honest John

I had to laugh yesterday when John McCain was asked why the Republicans were suddenly willing to work on immigration reform and he said, "Elections, elections". It was a rare, wonderful moment of political honesty...the kind of statement that could only be made by a veteran Senator who's too old to care anymore about saying what's politically appropriate.

Fun For The Whole Family

My favorite part of this article is when the author talks about a gun industry supported magazine called Junior Shooters. It once ran an ad that featured a smiling 15-year-old girl clutching a semiautomatic rifle and the punchline was “Who knows? Maybe you’ll find a Bushmaster AR-15 under your tree some frosty Christmas morning!”

Please Ignore His Record

Bobby Jindal is trying to portray himself as the guy who can transform the GOP into a political party minorities and white moderates will want to join. Too bad his rhetoric is so disconnected from his actions.

Quick Spins

I'm starting the year off with a couple of really solid new albums. The first one is "Mirage Rock" by the group Band of Horses. I've liked a few of theirs songs in the past but this time around every cut makes the grade in my opinion. It's great country rock with just enough surprises here and there to keep you guessing. Great stuff.
The other album is a "supergroup" collaboration called The Prog Collective. It features an amazing collection of veteran musicians playing together, inclduing Billy Sherwood, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Geoff Downes, Annie Haslam, Alan Parsons, John Wetton, Tony Levin, Colin Moulding and John Wesley. These songs are sonically ambitious but at the same time really gorgeous. This is one of those CDs you will discover something new on with each repeated listening.

Is This A Woman Or An Evidence Locker?

Republicans in New Mexico are trying hard to win the 2013 War On Women award.

They're Not Really Changing

When I watch the cable news shows on MSNBC, Fox, CNBC and CNN I see a parade of Republicans talking about how their party is making a huge effort to reach out to minorities and other groups. Boy, they learned their lesson last November. But then I see articles like this one and realize how much the GOP hasn't changed a bit.

Free, Unlimited Energy

I know it will be a while before we get away from fossil fuels. But the scenario presented in this article definitely gives me hope.

What A Pompous Little Man

Wiggle Room

Apparently the Catholic church DOES have some wiggle room when it comes to deciding if a fetus is a person.

How In God's Name Did We Survive The Past Four Years?

Here's a handy guide to nearly all the conspiracy theories that have been peddled about the president. Bet you didn't know he's been on the moon...

Obama's Scorecard So Far

Paul Krugman weighs in on what the president has accomplished so far, what goals he's failed to achieve and what lies ahead for the country during the next four years.

What A Stupid Move

Hey, NRA and GOP...can I give you a little advice? If you don't want to drive away moderates (especially women) you should refrain from running ads that talk about the president's children. Even Chris Christie is pissed.

Another Good Day For Wall Street

Wow, look what a toll this president has taken on corporate profits. I guess he just doesn't understand what it means to be an American.

So Now We Can't Even Agree On The Calendar?

Guns Over People

Wondering why the ATF is so undermanned and underfunded? The NRA and their political lackeys wanted it that way.

Liar, Liar, Spandex Tights On Fire

Sometimes I think the most appropriate punishment for non-stop liars like Lance Armstrong would be having to spend a year totally alone somewhere. You know, a place where they could only talk to themselves.

Help Wanted

Think the GOP is giving Chuck Hagel a hard time? Check out this list of eleven other famous entities who would have a hard time making the cut.

Baby Steps Toward Sanity

Interesting to see what different states are doing on the gun control issue. It will also be interesting to see how much the effort intensifies after the next mass shooting. Or the first episode where a gun owner is overwhelmed by his own paranoia and goes on a rampage.

Race To The Bottom, Last Stop

My wife and I were watching a very interesting (and troubling) piece on Sixty Minutes last night about automation in the workplace. Experts say rapidly advancing technology is one of the reasons we've had such a hard time recovering employment-wise from this last recession...corporations are replacing laid off workers with machines. My question is what kind of society will we have in the future when humans have to compete with robots who never get tired and need no benefits? Will it still be a capitalist system or something else?

A Great Season

The Seahawks ended up having a truly exciting season. I'm really looking forward to watching Russell Wilson and the boys again next year.

Would Duct Tape Solve the Problem?

GOP politicians continue to remind women why they should vote Democratic.

Chris Christie in 2016? It's Complicated

The governor of New Jersey has been getting a lot of good press lately. But is he really the kind of politician conservatives around the country want to vote for?

The Numbers Game

Here's an interesting piece about signs that human population growth is actually beginning to decline (and not just in certain countries).

Readin', Writin' and Rounds of Ammo

A Different Kind of Comfort

I'm an agnostic at this point in my life...I don't feel like humans can prove or disprove God exists. But I did read a piece this morning by an atheist who made an interesting point. Religious people are always saying atheism is a worthless philosophy because it offers no comfort in hard times. But this writer said they take comfort knowing there isn't a all-powerful diety out there who could prevent tragedies but for whatever reason chooses not to.

Another Elephant Uprising

I have to admit, it's pretty fun watching the northeastern Republicans throwing a fit about not getting their Hurricane Sandy money...
