Quick Spins

I'm starting the year off with a couple of really solid new albums. The first one is "Mirage Rock" by the group Band of Horses. I've liked a few of theirs songs in the past but this time around every cut makes the grade in my opinion. It's great country rock with just enough surprises here and there to keep you guessing. Great stuff.
The other album is a "supergroup" collaboration called The Prog Collective. It features an amazing collection of veteran musicians playing together, inclduing Billy Sherwood, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Geoff Downes, Annie Haslam, Alan Parsons, John Wetton, Tony Levin, Colin Moulding and John Wesley. These songs are sonically ambitious but at the same time really gorgeous. This is one of those CDs you will discover something new on with each repeated listening.

Wow. I have loved Band of Horses from day one and think the new record stinks. Production is sludgy and the tunes are not as melodic. Interesting that you like it more than the old ones. Oh well, different strokes...
