A Different Kind of Comfort

I'm an agnostic at this point in my life...I don't feel like humans can prove or disprove God exists. But I did read a piece this morning by an atheist who made an interesting point. Religious people are always saying atheism is a worthless philosophy because it offers no comfort in hard times. But this writer said they take comfort knowing there isn't a all-powerful diety out there who could prevent tragedies but for whatever reason chooses not to.

I'm with you, J. I also don't believe humans can prove or disprove a deity exists.

I also think that if "God is love" (as many believe) and if He was all-powerful He wouldn't make so many millions (or even billions) suffer. I believe this sort of stuff borders on silliness at times (like when people such as Pat Robertson blame natural disasters on things like homosexuality... i.e., "God is making us suffer for a reason, because we are displeasing Him," etc. so then they tell us why God is punishing us, etc.)

Those with religion like to think of agnostics and atheists as the evil ones, the bad ones... but I don't know of any wars in recent times that were started by atheists, or at least of any terrorist attacks perpetrated by atheists.

I don't care if someone wants to worship a Christian god, a Muslim god, or even if they think they have to eat peyote buttons or sacrifice goats. That's up to them, and I really doubt that I'll do anything to try and stop them. Like most other non-believers, I just want to be left alone by them when it comes to matters of religion.

What I mostly ask of those with religion is that if they think I am not doing the right things in the eyes of their God, then instead of hearing it from them let me hear if from their God.

I still haven't heard from him. I've been listening on and off for years, and there have been a few times when I think maybe I heard him.

And it's the *maybe* that makes me not a total atheist, more of an agnostic... but I definitely have doubts, and I lean toward atheism.

It's nice that times are changing in regard to all kinds of things. More enlightened views of race... Greater acceptance of homosexuality... fewer people thinking pot is a horrible evil thing... and more non-believers coming out of the closet and not being totally bashed for being non-believers. (Although I think all of those depend on what part of the country you live in.)

I'm still agnostic on the whole affair.
