I look forward to the day when electricity generated by a solar panel
powers my next car (some type of plug-in vehicle with a gas backup).

I look forward to the day a car doesn't need gas at all but alas I don't think I'll live that long. Was almost thinking about buying a Prirus until the economic meltdown.
The short term future is in either a natural gas or coal based combustion engine that will take us most of the way off petrol, the long term answer is in a hydrogen combustion engine.
Lithium ion batteries simply cannot store enough energy to meet the needs of American drivers, nor can solar power. We require a combustion engine to meet those needs. What is burning in those engines however? Thats something that we can change. That technology is ready for its time.
